#153: Networking for Executive Assistants and Administrative professionals: Guest: Monique Helstrom No one has the ability to understand what assistant go through other than fellow assistant, a strong network will always stick with you and even help with you next employment, use social media strategically to connect with other assistants around the Globe. Your LinkedIn in profile should be excellent add value to slack and Facebook communities.
Take the initiative to start an assistant happy hour or a lunch and learn “Grow your network before you need it”, do not get stuck with nowhere to tu0rn . Be a generous networker. The tactics to apply no one likes a networker that just wants to take without giving back or forming a genuine relation, help others but do not keep score if you help people without an expectation, they will owe you something this helps master the art of networking. To be a leader assistant be generous always question how you can help the person by just listening or sharing vital information.
Tips on how to network as an assistant who is an introvert.
- Start small, commit to just meeting three or four people and have go to questions like , what are the few things you can change as an assistant , always know your limit
Lessons I have learnt from this podcast To never underestimate how networking can help take one far in their career for example as stated by the host on how she grew to also start going to different countries like Germany, Hongkong and Thailand to train other Executive assistant.
I have also learnt to take the initiative and start something in my circle/ community, I can be the one to extend the invitation to other assistants and connect there, also to start now/ early to build up my LinkedIn profile.
Networking is connecting to form a deeper connection / bond with like minded individuals for mutual growth and benefit.
#Ep 168 On Becoming a Virtual Assistant: Guest: Kira Bennett
In this podcast Kira talks about her assistant career and becoming a virtual assistant. Having had a lot of roles in administration roles and also working with NHS and also some financial backgrounds ,with these at hand she decided to start up her own business offering these services to clients but not confined to a physical office space but virtually. It has been 6 weeks since she started and she is currently dealing with three clients and a potential fourth , she encourages others to take the bold step by building your websites and branding have the guts to launch your business. Also make sure you are active on social media and create pages for your business as in Kira case she got her second client from Facebook. How to work on pricing Kira suggest clients come with different budgets and packages with different services , so try to be flexible especially post-pandemic. With a wide variety of skill sets she is opened to helping clients from all works of life. Advice for new assistant be brave ask questions you can learn so much by asking questions and not assuming , Kira also mentioned to never stop being curious and asking questions to become better , this is really important as Nicole of nomad creativ also mentioned the same thing in my interview with her as well always ask questions from your executive and learn from their experiences too.
Lessons I have learnt from this podcast You need to take a bold step to achieve your goals, administrative roles have grown beyond the four walls of any office building. This helps and inspires me to “do it afraid “and not let my fears keep me from achieving remarkable things.
